Yuvaraj Singh Performance

Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who single-handedly won the first two ODIs for his team against England, is giving sleepless nights to the tourists, even as skipper Kevin Pietersen jokingly said that he would like to lock him up in room, making sure that he won't play in the third ODI scheduled for Kanpur.

KP said that Yuvraj was a match winner for India and it's very difficult for his side to get him out. "Yuvraj is a game breaker. He is a guy who wins matches and he is very difficult to get out when he is batting the way he is now. I'm going to take Yuvraj out in the hotel tonight and make sure he doesn't come to Kanpur for the next game!" 'The Sun' quoted the English skipper as saying.

In the first match at Rajkot, Yuvraj hit 138 not out from 78 balls, and then played a wonderful knock of 118 off 122 deliveries along with a tremendous bowling figures of 10-0-28-4 on Monday. His victims were England's four top scorers.

"Rarely in England's one-day history - and this was their 500th match since 1971 - have they been destroyed so completely by the single-handed brilliance of one player," said the paper.
It further stated that in the first game Yuvi didn't have a chance to torment England with the ball because he didn't field as he had a bad back. He played a better innings on Monday because India were tottering at 29-3 on a tricky pitch.

Ishant out of first ODI

Ishant Sharma, the Indian fast bowler, has been ruled out of the first ODI against England in Rajkot on Friday due to an ankle sprain. Ishant, who was Man of the Series in the recent Test series against Australia, has been advised five days' rest, a BCCI release said.
"He is undergoing his rehabilitation at present and is making good progress," N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, said. "Hence he would not be available for the first ODI against England."
Apparently, the team management had informed the BCCI that Ishant aggravated the injury due to his "bowling overload" during the last Test against Australia in Nagpur, which India won by 172 runs to clinch the four-Test series 2-0. Ishant bowled 35 overs in the final Test and took four wickets to complete a highly successful series in which he sent down 138 overs for 15 wickets.
The team management was planning to get MRI scan done on Ishant as a preventive measure and assess the injury in consultation with Mumbai-based doctor Anant Joshi, who is a member of the ICC's medical committee.
Ishant's injury will hit India's fast-bowling options for the series opener against England, leaving captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni with Zaheer Khan, RP Singh and Munaf Patel. Zaheer bowled 145.5 overs during the four-Test series against Australia. Munaf and RP Singh last played for India in August against Sri Lanka in Colombo during the five-ODI series, a series that Ishant missed.
The Indian team has reached Rajkot and is scheduled to have a practice session in the afternoon, while England is arriving in the evening and will have their nets on Thursday

Delhi Commonwealth Games in trouble over village project

New Delhi could lose the right to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games if organisers are forced to shift the athletes' village from its present location, a senior Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) official said on Tuesday.
The games village being built on the banks of the Yamuna, one of India's major rivers flowing through the capital city, is the subject of a legal case after a petition raised environmental concerns over the project.
The Delhi High Court last week asked an expert to submit a report on whether the village, to house around 8,500 athletes and officials, should be allowed at the spot.
The CGF coordination commission held a meeting to review the games preparations and its chairman Austin Sealy said the village would be the best built for a Commonwealth Games.
"However, the Federation is aware of an issue affecting the village is presently before the courts in India and therefore considers it inappropriate to comment on the matter other than to note that any change, at this late stage, to the Games village arrangements would seriously jeopardise India's hosting of the Games," he said in a statement.
"The organising committee has been urged to have the matter resolved as a matter of urgency."
The panel also raised concerns over the delay in starting the velodrome construction and urged the organising committee chiefs to intensify their overall efforts.
Construction delays have already forced next year's world badminton championships to be shifted to Hyderabad.
The Oct. 3-14 games will feature archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby 7s, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.

'I don't regret the Watson episode' - Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir, the Indian opener, says he does not regret elbowing Shane Watson, an action that earned him a one test ban . Gambhir, who missed the final Test of the series India won 2-0, also felt "sledging should be stopped" if the authorities felt what he did was wrong.

"No gentleman can hear things that Aussies were saying in Delhi. If what I did was wrong, then even sledging should be stopped, it has no place in the game," he said. "Aussies sledge from all corners, they sledged at me in Bangalore, Mohali and then in Delhi. I could have taken [their sledging] only to a point but they tend to get personal which is just not on.

"I agree that I shouldn't have crossed a certain line but people should take the holistic view rather than blaming just me for the episode," he said. "Frankly, I don't regret the Watson episode." Gambhir was banned for one Test by match referee Chris Broad after he nudged Watson with his elbow while taking a run on the first day of the third Test in Delhi. He had arguments with the bowler prior to the incident and later even got involved in a confrontation with Simon Katich after the bowler appeared to have stopped him from taking a run. Gambhir pleaded guilty to the ban, but appealed against the match referee's decision, an appeal rejected by ICC commissioner Albie Sachs.
Watson was fined 10% of match fee. "They don't like it when the opposition reacts the way we did. The Australians never thought we would come hard at them, that's why they reacted the way they did." Gambhir said he was unlikely to change the manner in which he approaches the Australians. "I like to be aggressive, I am a fighter who plays for his team, his country and will do everything to restore that pride and never you'd see me taking a backward step."Despite sitting out the Nagpur Test, Gambhir still emerged the leading run-getter in the series, with two centuries boosting his tally to 463. However, he lost out on the Man-of-the-Series prize to fast bowler Ishant Sharma. "I have never been that lucky, maybe I need to get 400! I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt. I take comfort in the fact that the team won the series and I am really happy for Ishant, who bowled his heart out."

Before the Mohali Test against Australia, where he scored his second Test hundred, Gambhir had been failing to convert half-centuries into big scores. "Frankly, it doesn't really bother me what critics say as long as I help my team and my country win series after series and tournament after tournament," Gambhir said. "VVS Laxman told me in Sri Lanka that my biggest challenge would be playing against Australia and I needed to pass that test. I met him in Nagpur and asked him if did clear that test, he told me, 'You have not only passed the test but passed it with a distinction.' I don't think I need any more approval from anyone."

Ponting an ordinary captain: Thomson

Ricky Ponting may be considered a premier batsman in contemporary cricket but as a skipper he is pretty ordinary, feels Australian bowling great Jeff Thomson.Thomson said he was never convinced of Ponting's leadership qualities and the resounding 2-0 series defeat against India only vindicates his view.
"I always thought he was an ordinary captain and this proves it," said Thomson who formed a lethal new ball partnership with Denni Lillee in the 1970s."His captaincy calculator isn't that brilliant, is it? Don't get me wrong, he's a great batsman but an ordinary captain," the former tearaway pacer told 'Herald Sun'.The sluggish over-rate in the Nagpur Test could have earned Ponting a one Test ban but the Australian captain used part-time bowlers and got away with a fine of 20 per cent match fees. But the decision to keep strike bowlers out of action and operating with the part-timers dashed whatever hopes Australia had of winning the Test and levelling the series and Ponting continues to draw flak for putting himself ahead of team.
His predecessor Steve Waugh said only the captain should not be blamed for slow over-rates but felt Ponting did make a mistake in Nagpur."I am sure Ricky would regret the decision," he told the same daily."Winning the Test match is what mattered. You have just spent six weeks in the subcontinent. You just don't take your foot off the gas," he added. Waugh felt too many drink breaks were slowing down the game and the authorities should look into the issue."...there are far too many stoppages. I remember when I played it was considered a badge of honour not to have a drink in a session (apart from the allotted break). And no one died from dehydration."These days there are far too many drinks breaks. It's ridiculous," Waugh said.

Another former captain, Ian Chappell, said Ponting cut a sorry figure in Nagpur but he still was the best man to lead the side."The Australians will be disappointed by what happened. But in essence they never had an attack that was going to work enough for them to work in India," Chappell told a cricket website."...his tactics after tea on the fourth day -particularly because it was such a significant moment - will always remain a query. He will certainly be questioned quite severely about it when he goes back home."But Ponting is still the best bet as captain for Australia. I think he is a good captain but for god's sake, he has got to stop getting himself into trouble with the over-rates and putting himself in a position where he cannot bowl the bowlers that he wants," Chappell added.

I was one of the most misunderstood captains: Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly might have ended his career as India's most successful captain but in an exclusive interview with NDTV, the left-hander exclaimed he was misunderstood during his stint as the captain of the team."Of course, I was. I have been completely misunderstood. My role on the field was taken of as the same credit as off the field. Whereas, off-the field I am a completely different person," Ganguly said after bidding adieu to international cricket.Ganguly defended everything he did on field by saying that the sole purpose of his actions was to take India on the top of the world cricket map."For me getting Indian cricket on the world map was the most important thing. I felt it was my responsibility to do it and I could see a team with me who could do it."So, I had to do everything which would make India a proud cricketing nation and that's what happened," he told NDTV in an interview.
